ASSIGNMENT
Design and 3D print an object (small, few cm) that could not be made subtractively. 3D scan an object.

3D PRINT
Test 1: I wanted to print something curved and within empty. I design with Rhino an helix and export it in .stl format.

From the FabLab computer I opened Cura, the default software used with the Ultimaker and loaded my file.

The result was not what I wanted: an empty helix. The dimensions were too small? My design was wrong? I tried with a dfferent shape.

Test 2: I relaxed the dimensions and prefered a planar model, to avoid the support structure and waste material.

Also at this try I couldn't get and empty strucutr, I understood that the problem was my design. Cura doesn't recognize my model like an empty form and fills the space with PLA, even if I selected fill density "0". My only chance was to change the model. With the simple offset comand I made my new Rhino model

And eventually I got what I wanted:

3D SCAN
I tried to scan a shell and I used the Roland Modela MDX-20.
First of all I prepared the machine: I replaced the milling front-end block with the scanner one

and I placed the board with the grid on the bottom.

Using modeling clay I positioned the shell on the grid and set the machine.

These are the steps I followed:
- open scanning Area
- set the X Area borders
- set the Y Area borders
- check the Z Upper limit and locate the probe on the upper point of the object (pressing apply the probe will move on the coordinates)
- pressing the grey corners on the yellow square I could move the probe on the edges of my scanning area.
- set the resolution (X Scan Pitch, Y Scan Pitch)
- set the Z Bottom (more or less the thickness of the plasticine base)

I did two scans with different resolution:
XScan Pitch = 0.2 mm
YScan Pitch = 0.2 mm

XScan Pitch = 0.1 mm
YScan Pitch = 0.1 mm
