Week16Applications and Implications
José J. Lazarte R.

Assignment
Plan and document a final project that integrates the range of units covered:
      what will it do?

My project is to build a shoe that generates electricity when walking. The generated energy is stored to be used to recharge portable electronic equipment.
      who's done what beforehand?
References:
1. The Japanese company NTT is developing a prototype of shoes that will be able to generate electricity as you walk wearing them.

2. The inventor is Baha al-Hasnawi, 30 years old. He created the device in his house, using the little engine of a toy of his child in the city of Karbala (Iraq).

3. Four mechanical engineering students at Rice University in Houston, Carlos Armada, Julian Castro, David Morel and Tyler West, created the PediPower shoes for their graduation project.

4. The mechanical engineers Tom Krupenkin and Ashley Taylor of the University of Wisconsin in Madison used power generation that produced a footprint shoe on the ground, through vibrational energy for creating a shoe that generates energy.

5. The researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta), Zhong Lin Wang and his team, including graduate student Long Lin, who submitted the job, was working on a miniature generator based on a phenomenon of energy called the piezoelectric effect, which is the result of pressure.

what materials and components will be required?
The materials required are: plywood wood 1.5cm, acrylic of 1cm , alternate generator, electronic components, springs and leather.

      where will they come from?
These materials will be obtained from the local market and the components are available in stock at the FAB LAB.

      how much will it cost?

The cost estimates according to the following groups of materials:
1. Materials: (Wood, Acrylic and leather) .......... 30.00 USD
2. Electronic Devices: ............................................. 15.00 USD
3. Electro-mechanical devices: .............................. 50.00 USD (considering the cutting and machining service)
Total: ............................................................................95.00 USD
what parts and systems will be made?
To make the project I should build the structure containing the mechanical part and the lever. The circuit allows the AC signal used to charge a battery and support that will contain the user's foot.
      what processes will be used?
For the construction of the platform's structure, I will use a machining process in the Shopbot. For making the lever I will use laser cutting and for milling the PCB I will use the Modela machine.
what tasks need to be completed?
The tasks to be completed are:
- Design and construction of the platform.
- Design and construction of the lever
- Design and manufacture of electronic circuits
- Design and construction support for the foot

what questions need to be answered?
I need to finish:
- The structure of the lever
- The printed circuit electronics
- Support for the foot

      what is the schedule?
The schedule of these last semnas presented below.

      how will it be evaluated?
The project performance will be evaluated through the ability to feed one luminaire of leds and the ability to charge a cell phone, after walking to charge the internal batteries.
projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of all of the skills
where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project
