Electronics Production
Fablab Cardiff is equipped with iModela and a Bungard CDD computer controlled drilling machine.
Detailed specification of the machine can be found on the company's web page. Unfortunately the CAM software ISOCAM that comes with it does not read .png but only Gerber and drill files. My first attempt to mill a PCB from a Gerber file (just an example) is depicted in the following image.
In my attempt to install FabModules and convert the .png files to Gerber files I got too many errors on the terminal to troubleshoot. So in order to try and produce the PCB board from a .png file I have attempted to use iModela which can handle much smaller material size: 86 mm (width) x 55 mm (depth) x 26 mm (height).
It is was not very easy to find tutorials about making a board with iModela. Of course an additional difficulty is the fact that I am a Mac user while iModela software is running on Windows. Finally I used the Modela milling machine with fabmodules cam software. I found it straightforward to produce the boards. Since I have some experience in soldering (through hole components though...) luckily I did not find it very hards to solder the surface mount components. The produced board appeared to have no production mistakes.
Finally when I tried to program it, everything worked fluently. My terminal log can be found here.
