Week 4 - Press Fit Construction

Home

Week 4 was the Press Fit project. The idea behind designing the press fit project is to learn to create things using only tight fitting joints. I chose to create a template for modular drawers that can be created in Fab Lab's for Fab Lab's.

The reason that I chose to do a project like this is simple. The biggest thing needed in Fab Lab's is storage for the mutlitude of things that are needed to create, prototype and fabricate. So I decided to design a set of modular drawers that can house anything from surface mount componants to large stepper motor, tools and bigger. The first restriction that I had to face was the 1'-0" x 2'-0" size of the laser cutter bed. Because the bed is smaller that the size of drawers that I wanted to make, I had to be sure to adjust my design to accomidate this size restriction. So to create a drawer that was approximately 2'-0" x 2'-0" I chose to build it in several pieces.

The drawer is made of 6 pieces.

  • 1 Front Pannel
  • 1 Back Pannel
  • 2 Side Pannels
  • 2 Base Pannels
  • The 4 pannels making up the edges are modular and can easily be made taller by changing the orginal model height. The size of the side pannels shown in the picture below are 0'-1 3/16" tall in order to give 0'-1" of total depth. The nominal over all dimenstions of the base were 2'-0" x 2'-0" but in order to fit them into the laser cutter I cheated them down slightly to create an overall actual dimension of 1'-10 51/64".

The image below is the completed drawer. It would use slide hinges on either side that would be mounted to a frame. The Interrior of the drawer was left blank because it is openly modular. Which means that it can have any number of interrior configurations depending on the need of the user/fabricator. This was a test model to see if the overall design would work, that is why the interrior was left blank.
