My goal was to create a distinctive bench for outside of the lab so that on nice days we could go out
and take breaks or chat. I designed the bench on paper and then in inkscape. Mary K helped to design the
hammer, pliers, and wrench that formed the back of the seats. We don't have a shopbot so we borrowed time on
another machine and a prototype was cut.
The pictures of the prototype show the bracing scheme that was developed. The triangular backsupport
was designed to provide both support for the back of the seat and to help hold the pieces together. Additional
support is provided by structural elements that support the legs. In the prototype the press fit was not
tight enough but in a final iteration that will be fixed. The finished bench will have the tools in place for back rests.
The bench will be painted the fresh green color that has come to be emblematic of the CUCFL.
